Schematic, PCB, footprint: what belongs where?

An electronics project is more than one file. Meet the files that keep a design together.

Schematics hold the connection logic

A .kicad_sch file defines symbols and electrical connections. In hierarchical designs, the root schematic may reference several child sheets. Preserve the child sheets when you move the root file.

The PCB is the physical layout

A .kicad_pcb file contains footprint placement, tracks, zones and board geometry. Schematics and physical boards are connected; checking that changes have transferred correctly is part of the design process.

Footprints describe the board interface

A .kicad_mod file includes pads, graphics and footprint properties. Matching package names do not guarantee matching pad dimensions or numbering. Check the manufacturer’s documentation.

Keep the context

Project settings, custom rules and library sources can affect how a design reopens. When sharing or archiving a project, preserve the required dependencies as well as the main board. Studio’s project package workflow helps carry that context together.
